Asthma is a long-term condition in which the airways become inflamed and sensitive, narrowing in response to triggers. The good news: with the right diagnosis and inhaler plan, most people control it well and live normally.

01

Symptoms

  • Cough, often worse at night or early morning
  • Wheezing or a whistling sound when breathing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest tightness
02

Common Triggers

  • Allergens like dust mites, pollen and pet dander
  • Respiratory infections such as colds
  • Air pollution, smoke and strong smells
  • Exercise and cold air
  • Weather changes and thunderstorms
03

How We Diagnose It

Diagnosis is based on your symptoms and history, supported by spirometry — a simple breathing test that measures how well your lungs are working. Allergy testing helps identify triggers that make asthma worse.

04

How It's Treated

  • Reliever inhalers for quick relief
  • Preventer (steroid) inhalers to control inflammation
  • Identifying and reducing triggers
  • A written asthma action plan
  • Allergen immunotherapy or biologics for selected patients

Uncontrolled asthma isn't something to live with. A proper review and action plan can dramatically reduce flare-ups.
