Most insect stings cause brief pain and swelling. But for some people, stings from bees, wasps or hornets trigger a severe allergic reaction that needs proper assessment.
Signs of a Serious Reaction
- Large swelling spreading beyond the sting site
- Hives or itching away from the sting
- Swelling of the face, lips or throat
- Difficulty breathing, dizziness or collapse (anaphylaxis)
How We Diagnose It
A history of the reaction is combined with skin prick testing or specific blood tests to confirm venom allergy and gauge your risk of a future severe reaction.
How It's Managed
- Advice on avoiding stings
- An adrenaline auto-injector and emergency plan for those at risk
- Venom immunotherapy, which can greatly reduce the risk of severe reactions in suitable patients
