Spirometry
A quick breathing test that measures how well your lungs work — key to diagnosing and monitoring asthma.

Spirometry is a simple, painless breathing test that measures how much air you can breathe out and how quickly. It's a cornerstone of diagnosing and monitoring asthma.
What It Measures
You breathe into a mouthpiece connected to a machine, taking a deep breath in and blowing out as hard and fast as you can. This shows whether your airways are narrowed, and by how much.
Why It's Useful
- Confirming a diagnosis of asthma
- Checking how well treatment is working
- Monitoring lung function over time
- Helping distinguish asthma from other breathing problems
What to Expect
The test takes just a few minutes and may be repeated after an inhaler to see how your airways respond. It's suitable for adults and older children who can follow the breathing instructions.
If you have a persistent cough, wheeze or breathlessness, spirometry helps reach a clear diagnosis.
